I think it's possible some Chinese ship could've gone off course and become stranded in modern day California somehow. I wouldn't be surprised if it was shipwrecked and they all died or something sadly though. However, I do think it seems likely the Japanese accidently discovered Alaska or Haida Gwaii after a ship went off course. They likely never tried to return there due to the incredible distance, which is why no ancient Japanese myths, stories or texts seem to even hint at North America. The Japanese didn't really care much for exploration until post-Columbus where they colonised some Islands in Oceania.

There are a lot of problems with Hui Shens descriptions.

    1. He describes the natives making paper from bark. To the best of my knowledge, there are no North American tribes that were able to make paper. Especially not near Alaska (where supposedly Hui Shen landed).

    2. Obviously, the existence of horses. There were no horses on the America’s when Hui Shen landed.

I’ll just start using actual quotes from now on.

    3. "An emperor, or a main chief, with the help of several officials, governed the country. The majority of the people were law-abiding citizens. The country had no army or military defense but it did have two jails, one jail was located in the north and the other jail was located in the south of the country. Those people who had committed serious crimes were sent to the north and they stayed there for their entire lives. However, these inmates could get married. If they got married and produced children, their sons became slaves and their daughters became maids."

Okay, so a lot to dissect here. The tribes in North America didn’t have any “emperors” and while they didn’t have a “military” they did certainly have warriors and they definitely waged war. In fact, we know that war becomes more and more brutal the more south you go on the continent.

    4. "In former times, the people of Fusang knew nothing of the Buddhist religion, but in the second year of Da Ming of the Liu Song dynasty (485 AD), five monks who were from the Kipin (Kabul region of Gandhara) traveled to that country by ship. They propagated the Buddhist doctrine, circulated scriptures and drawings, and advised the people to relinquish their worldly attachments. As a result, the customs of the people of Fusang changed."

See, initially I thought that Hui Shen might have just landed in Japan, but with this quote I’m pretty sure he’s just making things up.

If he did land in Japan, it would have been during the Kofun period, and by this time the Japanese would have been very aware of Buddhism via trade and regular communication with the Asian mainland. It likely wouldn’t have been terribly popular, but it definitely was around.

However, more notably, we have no evidence of Buddhist monks in the Americas in the 5th century AD.

There are also no tribes anywhere in North or South America that exhibit any of the main beliefs of Buddhism, except maybe the idea of reincarnation in some tribes.

I imagine a lot of different people found America and many accidentally – Vikings most certainly did, and ships all the way back to the Phoenician era would have been capable of making the voyage. However, finding it isn't the same thing as establishing a permanent link to it.

  4. *Eyes-of-Horus* diyor ki:

I recall seeing a documentary about much the same thing. Undersea archaeologists found Chinese stone anchors off the coast of Redondo Beach in California. These anchors date to before Columbus dropped anchor in Hispaniola.

  5. retep eyahaled diyor ki:

Columbus discovered the Americas. It was an event of monumental importance, since it entirely changed the history of the American people as well as several European nations. Undoubtedly others discovered the Americas, but those discoveries (like the Vikings) had little impact and often ended in a failure for the discoverers. But any nation who managed to journey to the Americas must be admired for their craftmanship – and their trips deserve to be remembered.

  6. E E diyor ki:

years back they found ancient chinese anchors off the coast of California…they're big round stone with hole through the middle.. I can't believe you didn't put that in your vid!!

  7. Drew Jones diyor ki:

It seems like horses might be a good topic for a video. Hearing that thing about the presence of horses just made me remember how influential the taming of horses was in terms of human development. I wonder in this instance if maybe another animal was mistaken for a horse. Like maybe a moose or something. Maybe that’s kinda dumb.

  8. Wolf-Torque diyor ki:

Fusang might be a collection of different places, but revised as a single place. It's not unusual, especially in the past, for people to write or remember in such a way. Parts of Fusang's description has some elements of the Northern nomadic peoples, but also of peoples of Japan or other nearby Islands.
As far as the Chinese reaching America…if there was any ounce of truth of Chinese being there before or around the time of European explorers, there wouldn't be enough presence to leave a significant cultural mark on the land or people.
