Fethiye is the name for the ancient Greek city of Telmessos. The city remained Greek from antiquity to 1922 that it was invaded by Ottomans. In 1934 it was renamed Fethiye after the name of an Ottoman pilot who was killed in WW1. The city is full of Greek cultural remains, churches etc. The deserted village shown in the video used to be a Greek village inhabited by Greek Christians who were forced to live their homes. It was named Levisi while Turks today call it Karakoy. In 1922 when Ottomans invaded, locals had 2 options, either to leave to Greece or claim that they are muslins, and thus Turks, and remain in their homeland. In addition, a number of Greeks who had converted to Islam during the Ottoman occupation, mainly to avoid paying hefty taxes imposed to Christians, had to leave other Greek areas such as Crete and move there. Thus, the population exchange between Greece and Turkey actually took place between Greek Christians and Greek Muslins between modern Greek places and former Greek places. To this end, the vast majority of nowadays residents of Fethiye/Makri are of Greek origin.
Ahhh when I last went (2017) we did a lot of this, I loved Kayokoy and we found a beach around the corner from the bay called Sugar Beach! I went to the Fish market and had Swordfish, ITS STILL MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE!!!
