Testing a spark plug that's not under compression is worthless.
The center insulator is very dark, the carburetor is running rich. If you can't adjust the carb use a hotter plug.
Great how to check. I've found there are 2 resistor types the good one, they have a solid core, the bad ones have carbon grains in the these are deceptivly nasty as they grains over time break down into smaller pieces and settle. Once this happens it sparks internally slowly destroying the grains and the longer they are used the worse it gets plus you get carbon tracking internally making them "look good" even if the gap is now to big to actually fire. Unless you have something like electronic ignition with similar output to a cars (they just keep ramping up the voltage until it can spark but also making for hard starting even on cars).
Great presentation! Good informaiton. Thanks.
Excellent video. Appreciate your thorough explanation.
Where will I get original spark plugs
THANKS
Waste of fucking time if the plug is dirty replace it done and done
They are using the wrong meter! You need to use a 50,000 volt Megger
can you chow me wher is the plog on a certifid snow blower 2o2o yars
Buy new ones. It can't hurt…
The type of resistor used in Champion plugs differs from most and can't be tested with an ohmmeter. The result will always be extremely high making it appear to be bad. The voltage output of a standard voltmeter is too low to obtain an accurate reading with the Champion resistors.

You taught Myra something he never know
I have tested 4 plugs and none of them read anything. 2 plugs are new and the other ones are fine. I know my multimeter works so I don’t know what is going on
I couldn’t get my Honda GCV 160 to start. I pulled the plug, grounded it attached the high tension lead and I saw spark, thinking it was good. I placed a brand new plug in the engine and it started right up. Why is it that under the pressure of a running engine will the plug fail yet when it’s outside the engine it sparks?
The definitive test is with a spark plug cleaner/tester. The tester is connected to compressed air. You put the plug in the cleaner opening, push the cleaner button and it sandblasts all carbon buildup from inside the plug. Then you you screw the plug into the compression chamber, turn up the air pressure which mimics compression pressure, and you observe the quality of the spark through a small window. If the spark is breaking down under pressure, it's easy to see. This is important because a plug that will fire under atmospheric pressure may fail under compression pressure.
These testers are still widely used in aviation, because airplane plugs are far too expensive to discard every time they get dirty. Been using these machines to clean my car/bike plugs for years. Saves a lot of money!
Wrong way to taste plugs with 9v 500 ma battery backed Multimeter. Directly connecting to ignition coil and cranking will give proper results
What about iridium spark plugs ? Does this procedure work on them as well?
OK so what should the reading be for a large engine, like in a vehicle?Like what most of us are probably here to find out.
Good afternoon sir. Please how can I get this plug.
Spark plugs are not read in the ohms they're read in the Kohns range. You said good spark plugs read in the five ohm Range Five ohms is almost a short you want to read in the kohm range thousands of ohms
You need to include “resistance AND continuity” in your discussion. There should be NO RESISTANCE between the center poles of a spark plug in a non-resistor spark plug, i.e. infinite “continuity”. In contrast, there should be INFINITE resistance between the center and side poles of a spark plug, i.e. ZERO continuity. ANY continuity (i.e. any level of measurable resistance other than infinite) between the CENTER and SIDE poles of a spark plug Indicates a short circuit, i.e. a bad plug. Either complete lack of continuity, or overly high resistance between the center poles of a RESISTOR spark plug, suggests either a completely open circuit, or a bad/overly high internal resistor….both also indications of a bad plug. Descriptions of resistance without mentioning continuity can be confusing.
great video thanks man
Killer name
I learned something new.
at 3:29 you are measuring 6 Ohms, but the meter is on 20k, so it is 6kOhms. 1000 times more tren 6 ohms you are saying….
Testing for resistance is worthless for non-resistor plugs . The only true way to test a plug is to substitute a known good one out a running engine or a brand new one . Part substitution is a lost art nowadays .
The easiest way to check a spark plug, is have a spare one, and install it. Works every time.
1 minute? Why 6 minutes for this video?
I realize this is an older video. If you really want to see what is inside any spark plug, take a blow torch and heat up the top porcelain of the spark plug and turn the top metal portion off (with gloves or pliers). It helps to use a vice to hold the spark plug when heating the top up. Than you can dump the resistor out. And you can see the metal parts used to make the plug. There is no one piece that goes through the spark plug when a resistor type plug is disassembled. The resistor looks like a piece of metal. But you can use the meter to read it from both ends. And if you want a non-resistor plug, simple use a similar diameter piece of wire cut to the same length as the resistor and reassemble it again. Plug will work and no resistance… Just some additional info!
