I have just been informed via a Turkist friend who knows the business well that Hereke rugs have not been made for many years now.
Even if the chinsese rug is a copy , they are better in quality and durability
The carpet seen draped over the table in Holbein's "The Ambassadors" is a Turkish or Caucasian carpet with a four cord selvedge.
I was in Turkey 3 years ago and wished to buy a Hereke.I can tell the difference between the real thing and a Chinese copy. The trouble is although I was shown lots of finely woven silk rugs there was no indication they were made in Hereke, could have been made in Kayseri for all I know.Didn't find one with the carduse that's supposed to signify a real Hereke.
God bless you Berry amazing video

Very informative, thank you.
Love my Herke. I bought it 30 years ago from the former Ambassador of Iran to Iraq. Real beauty.
We purchased a Hereke, 7'-8" by 11' from the Adm. Richard Bird estate sale (Andover, MA) back in 1985 or so. This one seems to have an 8-cord selvage. The selvage is "flat" but is the 8-cord a possibility for an antique, genuine Hereke rug? The quality seems to support authentic.
I have a beauty with gold wire. So proud. 1 meter by 1 1/2.
