East Coast – West Coast, how about the original English stuff ?
Importants things in the world indeed.
You didn't explain haziness!
I blame the millennial whiteclaw drinkers for making the juicy , hazy, new england style ipa's popular.
IPAS suck
i like that, its helped me very well, trying out some s-33 yeast straight away, thanks master.
Cheshire is a West Coast IPA? West Coast of the wrong continent.
Hi guys. Again, a bit silly. Which West coast? I'm assuming the Pacific North West of the U.S., as a counterpoint to the New England Beer. But come on, two Brits on a Santa Fe couch, snobbing out about U.S. beers made in the UK. I'm totally lost here. I've had UK style beer (as well as other regions) outside of the UK that are allegedly UK style and just not. Do they not import beers where you are? Was this guy in New England? Washington, Santa Fe………At your supreme level of understanding I'm sure you recognize the importance of ingredients, including water, which is rarely shipped accross oceans for brewing………
OK, a few moments ago I saw your PORTER exposition, now I'm seeing your presentation on IPAs.
Can't say I've been much of an IPA fan, but I have SLIGHTLY warmed to them. Particular to my local pub is one with a heavy dose of grapefruit to it, that grows on me without making my gorge rise from bitterness or the chewing of pine needles.
Currently four of the beers on draft at the local there are IPAs of wildly different types.
I find newbs that get into IPAs are doing so as a sort of brutal set of training wheels for graduates of the Budweiser crowd, who have discovered some things called FLAVORS and BODY.
Frankly I prefer a malt-forward brew, but I have modified my tastes a bit.
Well done, keep up the good work, I understand the sacrifices you have to make in your pursuits.
My favourite "normal" IPA was Epic IPA from New Zealand. They don't make it anymore, I don't know why. EC IPA are so many and so juicy that it's very hard to choose. I'll take one.
This is exactly why I hate American ipa.
Is there a difference between New England IPAs vs New England Hazy IPAs?
I feel like some New England IPAs are bitter with a good aroma and thickness without the sweetness of a full on "hazy" .
Some beers clearly distinguish themselves as New England IPAs and other state themselves as New England Hazys…
Recently I was told " All New England IPAs are Hazy IPAs "
I disagree, because I feel the when people say "Hazy" now days they mean the sweet juicy and frothy experience. But I think the old meaning of "Hazy" is the color / thickness… that used to not always be sweet . For example I feel the Firstone Walkers Mind Haze is totally overkill and way too sweet. However VitaminM(sea)3 Batch 3 is a thick but bitter NEIPA with a hop bite and not over sweetened.
So I may have answered me own question.. all NEIPAs are hazy in color/thickness but not all "Hazy" NEIPAs are true to the flavor of classic NEIPAs ? The IPA Hazy scene has made a huge morph to apply to the "pretend" IPA lover.. just to give them a overly sweet IPA that they can call drinkable…
Thoughts?
You forgot to mention the step after NEIPAs… The Milkshake IPA taking that sweetness to the next level. I would say after we saw the massive amounts of milkshake IPAs hit the market that the IPA market started swinging back towards the middle again.
Back in my hop head days of 2013-2016ish, I for sure got mango juice and pineapple juice notes (alongside the bitter/piney/danky notes) from massive west coast IPAs. But then I tried a Hazy/NEIPA for the first time probably in 2018 and obviously it was WAY MORE juicy, but I suppose it's somewhat subjective based of experience. What I mean is, if you've never had a NEIPA, it's wouldn't be uncommon to find tropical fruit notes and citrus fruit notes in west coast IPAs as I have here all over Southern California.
I really hate APAs and IPAs, unless the bitterness is perfectly balanced, which is rare. No one taste bud should be overwhelmed, and all you get is bitter fruit, you might as well drink cranberry juice. Give me a good lager, pilsner, stout, or, belgium and german ales – and I'm a happy man.
So east coast is the most inefficient beer known to man
Excellent video that raises an obvious question for me: what happens if you use a NEIPA yeast strain in a more typical West Coast recipe?
Why does watching these two give me flash backs to Wayne's World
I absolutely love a New England IPA. So good.
What is haze?
I know the answer, it's for people who want porridge in their beer.
There is no such thing as a good IPA. Bitterness is NOT a good flavor. It is just nasty. Anything over about 20-25IBU's masks any other flavor in the beer and makes it undrinkable. With America's current hop craze it has become very difficult to find a decent craft beer that is not over bitter. It's why I brew my own.
On top of that, look up the connection between hops and estrogen. Hops either have estrogen like compounds, or increase the production of estrogen in both males and females. Which in men lowers there testosterone. Which in turn leads to all kinds of other men's health issues. Hops are just not a good thing.
I thought that I didn’t like IPAs until I tried a new england IPA. I agree about the arms race regarding bitterness. Beer needs to be balanced and these new styles are a turnoff to me.
When i brew new england ipa i like to use the farmhouse yeasts from norway. I also have a great west coast-ish ipa that is loosly based on Traditional scandinavian farmhouse ales. I use a Lot of juniper berries and some juniper branches, piney hops, and a lithuanian farmhouse yeast.
I wish they'd stick to naming the unbalanced, over-hopped rubbish as APA (American Pale Ale), so I don't accidentally waste my money on it.
