I used to work at Starbucks (it was awful) and although I don't claim to be a coffee expert and Starbucks definitely does not follow Italian traditions when it comes to coffee, I'll explain how we were taught to make the caramel macchiato. So first we add the syrup then the steamed milk and then add the espresso shot on top. I'm now learning that this makes some sense because it "stains" the foam with a dot of espresso like you said, but then when you add the caramel sauce it sort of covers it up. But hey this is America and we love our sugary drinks.
Also the iced macchiato is the same thing it goes vanilla, milk, ice, espresso, with the espresso sitting on top of the ice and milk, and then caramel. So in a way the carmel and the espresso stain the milk. Pretty clever for an American market but a total bastardization of the original Italian classic. Definitely more a latte than a macchiato.
I'm just remembering that Starbucks does offer the original Italian drink under the name "Espresso Macchiato" and the description is "our rich espresso with a dollop of steamed milk and foam" I remember someone ordered that once and i tried to ring them up for a regular macchiato and they were confused why it cost like 6 dollars. Then someone told me it was a different drink. I guess this is what they meant!
The difference with the starbucks caramel macchiato is that it is a latte macchiato, so milk stained with espresso (though the ratios are a bit different), then it is also stained with caramel drizzle. It's an extra sweet caramel latte macchiato.
The milk goes in first, then the espresso, then the drizzle.
perfect, u are the best
When you talk about single shot vs double shot, what do you mean? Is a single espresso, 18g in? If so, for a macchiato do you tend to stick to a 1:2 extraction ratio and extract 36g of coffee?
This. The end
Nice video, as always! Thanks much!
okay okay, I was at work yesterday and for the very first time someone asked for one so I went to the little book thing w the coffees and it said it's hot milk and flavored syrup? no coffee?
Thank you for putting out this video. I’m an American who spent six years in Southern Europe. During my three years in Napoli (Naples, Italy) I developed a love of all things espresso, and cafe macchiato is a personal favorite. I try to explain to my fellow Americans that cafe macchiato (“marked” or “stained” coffee) is a single shot of espresso marked with a dab of steamed milk and they look at me like I’ve lost my mind. The first time I went to a Starbucks and was given a lungo (large, or long pull shot of espresso) under a big mound of dry foam I was disgusted. And if it has caramel syrup it’s not espresso, it’s a freakin’ milk shake!
How do you get a good decaf extraction?
Macchiato is one of my favorites to make at home but ording it when out I'm often scared to see what shows up.
What a great video to clarify things up. Even though I never drink milk based coffees. But I will certainly give this a try…
*Now to look for an espresso machine!
can you make a ristretto macchiato? I can't imagine you'd ever want to destroy a ristretto like that, but just wondering if it's a thing
Traditional Italian all the way!
In Seattle they make a mini latte. I had to educate countless baristas on true macchiato
What a great video. Thank you guys!!
A macchiato is my go to drink at a cafe and at home. when I think of an original macchiato I think of a double shot of espresso with 3 teaspoons of steamed milk micro foam. No liquid milk makes it to the glass just the foam.
I can assure you that in Italy the expression "un macchiato" or "un caffè macchiato" are referring to your first one: an espresso with some drop of milk added at the top. The milk could be hot (macchiato caldo) or cold (macchiato freddo).
So it would be better if anyone who want to use an Italian word or expression could keep the same meaning as in the original language. Just to avoid misunderstanding
What about the WA long macchiato?
